Personal Lesson: Blending Turn & Hinge | Golf Australia Magazine When I see people working on their swings, one of the most common things I see people focusing on is turning their shoulders, which is no doubt important, but often can leave the first part of the swing lacking enough hinge, in both the wrists and elbow. This tends to make people drag the club and arms too much to the inside of a good swing path on the backswing (pics 1 & 2). A good drill to help you feel the proper blend of turn and hinge is to practise the first part of the swing gripping cross-handed. Firstly, grip the club normally, then place your top hand below your bottom hand, leaving room above the bottom hand. The club will hover off the ground. The elbow of the hand that is now on top will feel tucked in more than normal (pics 3 & 4). Now, hinge away to waist high, feeling the hand that is now on top of the club (the right hand for right-handers), stays underneath the hand that was below at address and the elbow will point down (pics 5 & 6). Now take the hand that is now sitting higher (the left hand for right-handers) and place it back on the club where it would normally sit (pic 7). The club should now be sitting on the ideal plane. From this position, you are now free to turn your shoulders to the top.
